Overview
Toledo Bend Reservoir is a roughly 181,600-acre border lake on the Sabine River along the Texas–Louisiana line, spanning multiple East Texas and western Louisiana parishes. The dam was completed in the 1960s and is jointly operated by the Sabine River Authority of Texas and the Sabine River Authority, State of Louisiana for water supply, hydroelectric power, and recreation. It is the largest reservoir in the South by surface area.
At conservation pool the lake has about 1,200 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 20 feet, and a maximum depth of about 110 feet. Piney woods, flooded timber, endless creek arms, and broad open water create vast structured habitat that defines East Texas and western Louisiana bass fishing.
Toledo Bend is nationally known for largemouth bass and also produces crappie, catfish, and white bass, with fisheries managed cooperatively by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Louisiana agencies. Public parks, marinas, and boat ramps on both shores support heavy tournament and recreational use.
Water levels are managed by the Sabine River Authorities around a conservation pool of 172 feet above mean sea level, with top of emergency spillway gates near 173 feet. Upstream on the Sabine system, Lake Fork is a major Texas water-supply and trophy-bass reservoir. Monitoring Toledo Bend levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access across such a large, timbered basin.
