Lake Insights aggregates public hydrology, weather, and operator-published information. We do not operate gages, dams, or forecast offices. This page explains what may appear on a lake page, how we try to show source context, and why readings can differ between websites.
Source availability varies by lake
Not every reservoir has a live public feed. Some lakes have multiple overlapping sources (for example USGS and a federal operator); others rely on periodic operator reports or web pages. When no reliable feed exists, we show catalog metadata and editorial context but may label live level as unavailable.
- U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) — stream and reservoir gages where published
- NOAA / National Weather Service (NWS) — forecasts, observations, and hydrologic products
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) — reservoir reports and project pages where available
- State natural resources, water, or parks agencies
- Municipal water utilities and regional authorities
- Power companies and reservoir operators (including scrape or operator pages when no API exists)
- International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) and other binational operators where applicable
Lake levels and stage
Where a gage or operator feed exists, we ingest elevation or stage readings and normalize display against catalog fields such as full pool, conservation pool, or flood stage when those values are on file for the lake.
Update timing depends on the upstream agency—often hourly to daily, sometimes slower during maintenance or telemetry outages. A timestamp on the lake page reflects the last observation we received, not necessarily the moment you are viewing the page.
Datum and reference elevations
Water levels are meaningless without a vertical datum or reference standard. Agencies may report NAVD88, NGVD29, local pool references, or project-specific elevations. The same physical water surface can appear as different numbers if two sites use different datums.
Lake Insights shows datum and elevation-reference labels from our catalog when available, and surfaces the reporting agency on the lake page. Always confirm the datum before comparing a Lake Insights reading to a chart, permit, or neighbor's app.
Glossary entries such as full pool, flood stage, and gauge stage explain common terms—see the Glossary.
Weather, sun & moon, and alerts
Forecasts and current conditions generally come from National Weather Service–aligned products tied to the nearest relevant grid or station for each lake. Sun and moon times use standard astronomical calculations for the lake's coordinates. Alerts and statements reflect products available through our alert pipeline when configured for the lake.
Weather describes the atmosphere near the lake, not conditions inside a narrow cove or below a cliff line.
Places, ramps, and catalog metadata
Marina, ramp, and point-of-interest listings may combine editorial curation, user-facing catalog fields, and third-party place data. Availability and accuracy vary; always confirm hours, fees, and access with the operator before you travel.
Limitations and your responsibility
Public data can be delayed, revised, or missing. Lake Insights may display cached or interpolated values during upstream outages. For navigation, flood safety, dam operations, or tournament rules, use official sources and on-site judgment.
Report a data issue
If a level, datum label, source link, or overview looks wrong, please submit a correction with the lake page URL and, when possible, a link to the authoritative reading you trust.
