Overview

Caney Lake (Caney Creek Reservoir) is a roughly 5,000-acre reservoir on Caney Creek in Jackson Parish between Chatham and Jonesboro in north-central Louisiana. The dam was completed in 1986 for recreation and related local water uses under the Jackson Parish Watershed District. Public recreation is anchored by Jimmie Davis State Park on a peninsula along the north shore.

The lake has about 72 miles of irregular shoreline, an average depth near 16 feet, and a maximum depth of about 43 feet. A small watershed of roughly 42 square miles keeps seasonal fluctuation modest (often only a foot or two), and the many points, coves, and creek arms created when Caney Creek and its tributaries were flooded give the basin abundant structure for boaters and anglers.

Caney is famous in Louisiana bass-fishing history—including the long-standing state-record largemouth—and also produces crappie, bream, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. State-park launches, cabins, camping, and additional public and private ramps support heavy local and destination use.

Water levels are typically held near a normal pool around 200 feet above mean sea level. Because the watershed is small, the pool is relatively stable compared with large river reservoirs, but drought, local storms, and any management releases still matter for docks and shallow points—so monitoring current lake levels remains useful. Sister north Louisiana waters include Bayou D'Arbonne Lake and Lake Claiborne.
