Terms of Service
Last updated: September 8, 2026

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the Lake Insights website and related services operated by Lake Insights (“we,” “us,” or “our”). By accessing the site, creating an account, or using our features, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use Lake Insights.

1. Acceptance of Terms

Using Lake Insights means you accept these Terms and any policies we reference, including our Privacy Policy. If you use the service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization.

2. About Lake Insights

Lake Insights provides lake-related information and tools for boaters, anglers, and others interested in lakes. Depending on the lake and what is available, features may include:

  • Lake levels and related conditions
  • Weather and forecasts
  • Water temperature where available
  • Fishing Outlook analysis
  • Lake profiles and editorial lake information
  • Ask Dock Talk (AI-assisted answers grounded in available evidence)
  • Dock Talk Community (member observations, reports, questions, replies, and photos)
  • Saved preferences such as a Home Lake and favorites
  • Alerts for eligible members
  • Related lake resources and gear recommendations

Not every lake has every data feed or feature. Coverage, freshness, and capabilities vary by lake and may change over time.

3. Informational nature of the service

Lake Insights is for general information and planning. We use third-party and official data sources, editorial content, community observations, and AI-assisted tools. You should expect that:

  • Data can be delayed, incomplete, or unavailable
  • Sensors and upstream feeds can fail or report incorrectly
  • Forecasts and outlooks can be wrong
  • Lake levels and on-water conditions can change quickly
  • Community observations may be inaccurate or outdated
  • AI responses may contain errors or omit important context

Do not rely on Lake Insights as your sole source for decisions involving personal safety, navigation, flood or emergency conditions, severe weather, boating safety, dam or release operations, or regulatory compliance. Follow official authorities (for example, NOAA/NWS, local emergency managers, reservoir operators such as USACE where applicable, and on-site conditions) for critical decisions.

4. Accounts

You may browse much of Lake Insights without an account. Creating an account unlocks member features such as saving a Home Lake, favorites, Dock Talk Community participation, higher Ask Dock Talk allowances, and other signed-in tools we offer.

Sign-in is handled through our identity provider. We may offer email/password registration and sign-in, and we may also offer Facebook Login through that identity provider. When you use Facebook Login, Facebook authenticates you and may share basic profile information such as your name and email with our identity provider so we can create or recognize your Lake Insights account. Lake Insights does not receive your Facebook password, and Facebook Login is not used to import your Facebook friends, posts, likes, or social graph.

Account information you provide should be accurate where applicable. You are responsible for activity under your account and for keeping access to your sign-in methods secure. We may suspend or restrict accounts for abuse, fraud, security risk, or violations of these Terms.

5. Free and paid services

Lake Insights currently offers free public browsing and free registered-member features. Some capabilities (for example, certain alert products) may be limited to paid membership tiers when those tiers are available.

Paid signup and self-serve billing are not generally available today. When paid plans are offered, current pricing and included features will be shown at the time of purchase or upgrade, and may change over time. We do not invent pricing in these Terms.

6. User-generated content / Dock Talk

Dock Talk Community lets members share on-the-water reports and conversation, including local updates, fishing reports, water-condition and ramp/access reports, questions, replies, helpful reactions, and photos.

You are responsible for what you submit. You must not post content that:

  • Is illegal
  • Threatens, harasses, or targets others
  • Is spam or commercial solicitation we have not authorized
  • Impersonates another person or misrepresents your identity or affiliation
  • Infringes someone else’s rights, including copyright or privacy rights
  • Contains malware or other malicious material
  • Knowingly spreads dangerous misinformation about conditions that could put people at risk

Lake Insights may moderate, hide, remove, or restrict content or accounts, and may retain related moderation or report records as appropriate. We do not promise that all content is reviewed before it appears publicly.

7. License for user content

You retain ownership of the content you submit to Dock Talk and other member features. You grant Lake Insights a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, display, reproduce, adapt for formatting (including resizing images), distribute, and otherwise use that content as needed to operate, improve, and promote Lake Insights—including showing it in feeds, permalinks, social sharing previews, and Lake Insights marketing that features community activity.

This license lasts for as long as your content remains on the service. If content is removed or your account is deleted under our deletion process, we will stop displaying it publicly except where limited copies may remain in backups, logs, or records we are allowed or required to keep (see User Data Deletion).

8. Community observations

Dock Talk posts are user-generated observations and conversation. Unless we expressly identify something as an official measurement or verified agency publication, community content is not an official lake-level reading, weather warning, or regulatory notice. Treat it as peer reports that may be wrong or incomplete.

9. Ask Dock Talk / AI

Ask Dock Talk uses artificial intelligence to help answer questions about lakes using available Lake Insights evidence and related sources. Answers may combine retrieved information with generated text. AI output can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Verify important information independently before relying on it.

10. Third-party data

Lake Insights uses third-party and official sources (for example, governmental agencies and other data providers). Those providers control their own systems. Availability, latency, and accuracy are outside our full control. Attribution may appear on the site. Service interruptions or gaps can occur without notice.

11. Weather, fishing, and boating disclaimer

Lake Insights is not:

  • An emergency alert authority
  • A marine navigation or charting service
  • A substitute for NOAA/NWS, local emergency agencies, or reservoir operators
  • A guarantee of fishing success

Fishing Outlooks are informational analysis and predictions, not guarantees. Always use your own judgment, local rules, and official guidance on the water.

12. Affiliate links and advertising

Lake Insights displays advertising (including Google AdSense for free visitors) and participates in affiliate programs, including the Amazon Associates Program. As an Amazon Associate, Lake Insights earns from qualifying purchases. Some links may be affiliate links; we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Third-party advertisers and merchants have their own terms and privacy practices. We do not claim that advertisers receive your private account conversations or Dock Talk private account data through our ad placements. See our Privacy Policy for additional disclosure.

13. Intellectual property

The Lake Insights name, branding, site design, software, and original editorial content are owned by us or our licensors. Third-party data remains subject to its source terms. User-generated content remains owned by its authors, subject to the license in these Terms. You may link to our pages; substantial republication of our original content requires permission unless a specific license applies.

14. Prohibited use

You agree not to:

  • Abuse, overload, or attack our infrastructure
  • Bypass security, authentication, or access controls
  • Use automated means to spam, scrape beyond normal browsing, or misuse APIs without permission
  • Interfere with other users or the integrity of Dock Talk
  • Impersonate others or create accounts for abusive purposes
  • Misrepresent affiliation with Lake Insights or upstream data providers

Ordinary search-engine crawling of publicly available pages in accordance with robots.txt is not prohibited by this section.

15. Account suspension and termination

We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access for violations of these Terms, abuse, fraud, or security reasons. You may request account or data deletion as described on our User Data Deletion page.

16. Service availability and changes

Features, data sources, and coverage may change. We do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free, or permanent availability of any particular lake feed or product feature.

17. Disclaimer of warranties

THE SITE AND SERVICES ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE.

18. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, LAKE INSIGHTS AND ITS OPERATORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SITE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) AMOUNTS YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations. In those places, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law.

19. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. We will post the revised version on this page and update the “Last updated” date above. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance. When practical, we may also note material changes on the site.
