At-a-glance
Lake Sam Rayburn is a large reservoir on the Angelina River in deep East Texas, completed in the mid-1960s and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. At full pool it spans roughly 114,000 acres, making it the largest lake entirely within Texas. Its position in the Neches-Angelina basin gives it a central role in regional flood control, hydropower, water supply, and recreation.
The shoreline runs through piney woods country, with long creek arms, gently sloping banks, and extensive submerged timber and brush that define much of the basin. Points, creek channels, and shallow flats alternate with open main-lake sections, creating varied habitat across the reservoir. Seasonal water-level changes expose additional cover and shift access to shallow structure throughout the lake.
Lake Sam Rayburn is widely regarded as one of Texas premier largemouth bass fisheries, with established populations of crappie, catfish, and other sport species as well. The lake draws anglers and boaters from across the South and hosts major tournaments, while the Corps continues to operate the dam for flood management and power generation alongside its role as a major recreational destination.
