Recommendations for Lake Arthur

Overview

Lake Arthur is a roughly 3,225-acre reservoir on Muddy Creek in Butler County, the centerpiece of Moraine State Park in western Pennsylvania. The lake and park are managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as a major public recreation resource about 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh. Unlike many Corps flood-control lakes, Arthur was built primarily as a state park reservoir for outdoor recreation.

With about 42 miles of shoreline inside a more than 16,000-acre park, Lake Arthur offers north- and south-shore beaches, wooded coves, wetlands, and open water framed by glacial hills left by the Wisconsin ice sheet. Full pool is listed near 1,190 feet above mean sea level, and the mix of shallow bays and deeper main-lake water creates varied habitat for fish and wildlife across the Moraine landscape.

The lake is popular for boating, sailing, swimming, paddling, and fishing for bass, walleye, muskie, and panfish, with regulations from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Park launches, marinas, bike trails, and overnight facilities provide broad public access on both shores and make Moraine one of western Pennsylvania's busiest outdoor destinations.

Water levels on Lake Arthur are managed within the state park and reservoir operating band around the listed full pool near 1,190 feet. Seasonal recreation needs, watershed inflows, and dam releases all influence usable shoreline and ramp conditions, so monitoring current lake levels is helpful for boating, fishing, beach use, and dock or shoreline access through the recreation season.
