Overview
Berlin Lake is a 3,321-acre multipurpose reservoir on the Mahoning River in northeast Ohio. Berlin Dam was completed about 1942–43, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District operates the project for flood risk management, water supply, recreation, and fish and wildlife habitat. The lake remains one of the region's principal Corps waters, serving both local communities and visitors drawn to the Mahoning River valley.
The reservoir has about 68 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 23 feet, and a maximum depth around 55 feet. Its wide Mahoning River basin includes productive flats, points, channel bends, and creek mouths that create classic warmwater structure. The combination of broad flats and deeper channel edges is especially important for seasonal fish movement and for boaters navigating between open water and the more protected tributary arms.
Berlin is especially known for walleye fishing, along with bass, crappie, and other warmwater species, plus boating, camping, and day-use recreation. It shares the Mahoning-area Corps system with Mosquito Creek Lake and Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir. Anglers should consult the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for Ohio fishing regulations, while Corps recreation areas and public ramps support the lake's established angling and boating use.
Elevations are reported on NAVD88, the Pittsburgh District's converted datum: full pool is 1,024 feet, winter pool is 1,015.9 feet, and flood storage reaches 1,031.31 feet. Seasonal drawdown and Mahoning River inflows affect shoreline cover, ramp depth, and fish habitat. Monitoring current lake levels is important for boating safety, dock access, and planning trips during spring runoff or winter storage operations.
