Overview
Mosquito Creek Lake is a 7,850-acre reservoir in Trumbull County, built in 1944 on Mosquito Creek. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District manages the lake for flood-risk reduction, recreation, and fish and wildlife uses. The Trumbull County setting includes extensive public recreation lands around a broad basin that feels markedly different from the region's narrower river-valley reservoirs.
With about 40 miles of shoreline, the broad, shallow reservoir is one of Ohio's largest inland lakes. Wind exposure can be substantial across the open pool, and a natural spillway near 903.5 feet routes water toward the Grand River and Lake Erie. That expansive, shallow character creates long sightlines, productive flats, and marsh-influenced edges unlike the steeper profiles at Berlin Lake or Kirwan Reservoir.
Fishing, boating, camping, and waterfowl-related recreation are key uses around the lake. Anglers pursue walleye, bass, crappie, and other warmwater species and should consult the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for Ohio fishing regulations. Public ramps, camping areas, and Corps recreation lands support both open-water trips and quieter shoreline use along the broad basin, especially when wind keeps larger boats closer to protected water.
Levels use NAVD88, with a normal full pool of 901.4 feet and flood storage to 904 feet. No distinct winter target is recorded in the catalog; inflow, spillway conditions, and Corps operations control changes. With limited freeboard to flood storage and a wind-sensitive surface, current levels and marine weather are particularly relevant before open-water trips or shoreline launches.
