Lake Tawakoni

The basin presents broad open water, creek arms, points, and extensive shoreline flats characteristic of a large East Texas supply reservoir. Depth and bottom composition vary from shallower cove and flat habitats to deeper water toward the dam and riverine channels, creating a wide range of boating and fishing structure. Its scale in the Sabine basin and role as a major SRA storage project define the reservoir’s physical character.

Lake Tawakoni supports recreational boating and sport fishing through public ramps, parks, and shoreline access around the lake. Fishing and boating regulations are guided by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Facilities around the reservoir provide regional access for day-use and overnight visitors.

The Sabine River Authority manages Tawakoni for water-supply storage and system operations. Published references include a conservation pool near 437.5 feet and a dead pool near 378 feet. Inflows, regional demand, and drought or wet-period hydrology move elevations through that storage range. Monitoring lake levels matters for boat-ramp usability, fishing access, shoreline conditions, and understanding remaining storage above dead pool.
