Recommendations for Lake Fork

Overview

Lake Fork is a roughly 26,900-acre reservoir on Lake Fork Creek and Caney Creek in Wood, Rains, and Hopkins counties in northeast Texas. The dam was completed in the early 1980s and is operated by the Sabine River Authority of Texas primarily for water supply, with recreation and a nationally known fishery as defining secondary uses.

At conservation pool the lake has about 315 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 24 feet, and a maximum depth of about 70 feet. Extensive standing timber, brush, creek channels, and shallow flats create some of the most structured bass habitat in Texas, set in piney woods country with long winding arms.

Lake Fork is nationally famous for trophy largemouth bass and also produces crappie and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Marinas, public ramps, and lakeside communities draw tournament and destination anglers from across the country, while the reservoir continues to serve regional water-supply needs.

Water levels are managed by the Sabine River Authority around a conservation pool of 403 feet above mean sea level. Maximum design water surface is near 407.9 feet; the project is primarily a water-supply lake rather than a large flood-control reservoir. Downstream on the Sabine, Toledo Bend is the basin's giant border lake, so monitoring Fork levels remains important for fishing, boating, and dock access.

Current Conditions

Lake Fork is currently 3.45 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
