Recommendations for Waurika Lake

Overview

Waurika Lake is a roughly 10,100-acre reservoir on Beaver Creek (a Red River tributary) in Jefferson County, about six miles northwest of Waurika in southwestern Oklahoma. It was placed in operation in the late 1970s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the conservation pool filled in 1982. Authorized purposes include flood control, water supply, irrigation, water quality, recreation, and fish and wildlife.

OWRB figures show about 80 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth near 52 feet at normal pool, with an average depth of roughly 18–19 feet. Open main-lake water, creek arms, and gently rolling prairie shoreline define the basin.

Waurika is fished for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and white bass, with fisheries managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Corps parks, campgrounds, and boat ramps provide public access for the southern Oklahoma / north Texas border region.

Water levels are managed by the Corps around a conservation pool of 951.4 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), with flood-control storage to 962.5 feet. Beaver Creek floods and water-supply releases can change elevations, so monitoring current lake levels helps with boating, fishing, and shoreline access.

Current Conditions

Waurika Lake is currently 0.67 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
