Overview
Lake Arrowhead is a roughly 14,970-acre water-supply reservoir on the Little Wichita River in Clay and Archer counties, southeast of Wichita Falls in north-central Texas. Arrowhead Dam was completed in the mid-1960s, and the lake is owned and operated by the City of Wichita Falls for municipal and industrial water supply with recreation as a secondary use.
At conservation pool the lake has about 106 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 16 feet, and a maximum depth of about 45 feet. Broad flats, creek arms, and wind-swept open water characterize the Rolling Plains setting, with submerged timber and points providing structure for fish when the pool is near full.
Arrowhead is a regional destination for boating, camping, and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and white bass, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Lake Arrowhead State Park and public boat ramps provide primary access for visitors from Wichita Falls and the surrounding area.
Water levels are managed by the City of Wichita Falls around a conservation elevation of 926 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), which coincides with the spillway crest; the project does not operate a separate USACE-style flood pool. Elevations respond to municipal demand and rainfall on the Little Wichita watershed, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.
