Recommendations for Neely Henry Lake

Overview

Neely Henry Lake (H. Neely Henry) is a roughly 11,200-acre storage reservoir on the Coosa River in Cherokee, Calhoun, Etowah, and St. Clair counties in northeast Alabama. Neely Henry Dam was completed in 1966 by Alabama Power as part of the Coosa River development that also built Weiss and Logan Martin dams. The lake is operated for hydropower, limited flood storage, and recreation.

With about 339 miles of shoreline and a length of nearly 78 miles, Neely Henry is a long, relatively shallow riverine lake with a maximum depth near 53 feet at the dam. Creek arms, main-channel ledges, and developed shoreline communities characterize much of the pool.

The lake is popular for spotted and largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Public ramps, marinas, and towns along the Coosa between Gadsden and the Weiss tailwater provide access.

Water levels on Neely Henry Lake are managed by Alabama Power under a seasonal operating guide, with a normal summer pool of 508 feet above mean sea level and a winter pool near 507 feet. The lake sits between Weiss Lake upstream and Logan Martin Lake downstream, so monitoring current lake levels is important during fall drawdown and high-flow periods.
