Overview
Weiss Lake is a roughly 30,200-acre storage reservoir on the Coosa River in Cherokee County in northeast Alabama, near the Georgia line. Weiss Dam was completed in 1961 by Alabama Power as the first of the company's mid-century Coosa River projects and named for former chief engineer F.C. Weiss. The lake is operated for hydropower, limited flood storage, and recreation.
With about 447 miles of shoreline, a length near 52 miles, and a maximum depth of about 62 feet at the dam, Weiss is a broad, relatively shallow Coosa lake known for fertile water, creek arms, and extensive shallow flats. Much of the shoreline supports homes, marinas, and fishing camps.
Weiss is famous for crappie fishing and also produces largemouth and spotted bass, striped bass, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Public ramps, marinas, and the Centre/Cedar Bluff communities anchor regional recreation.
Water levels on Weiss Lake are managed by Alabama Power under a seasonal operating guide, with a normal summer pool of 564 feet above mean sea level and a winter pool near 561 feet. As the uppermost Alabama Power storage lake on the Coosa above Neely Henry Lake, elevations respond to rainfall and guide-curve operations, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.
