Recommendations for Logan Martin Lake

Overview

Logan Martin Lake is a roughly 15,260-acre storage reservoir on the Coosa River in Calhoun, St. Clair, and Talladega counties east of Birmingham. Logan Martin Dam was completed in 1964 by Alabama Power as part of the mid-century Coosa River development that also built Weiss and Neely Henry dams. The lake is operated for hydropower, limited flood storage, and recreation.

With about 275 miles of shoreline, a length near 48 miles, and a maximum depth of about 69 feet at the dam, Logan Martin mixes open main-lake water, creek arms, and heavily developed residential shoreline. Seasonal storage draws the pool down a few feet in fall and winter for flood management.

The lake is a major Birmingham-area recreation destination known for spotted and largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Marinas, public ramps, and lakeside communities ring much of the shoreline.

Water levels on Logan Martin Lake are managed by Alabama Power under a FERC operating guide coordinated with the Corps of Engineers, with a normal summer pool of 465 feet above mean sea level and a winter pool near 462 feet. The lake sits between Neely Henry Lake upstream and Lay Lake downstream, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access during seasonal drawdowns and high-flow events.
