Recommendations for Millwood Lake

Overview

Millwood Lake is a roughly 27,100-acre flood-control and water-supply reservoir on the Little River in southwestern Arkansas, about seven miles east of Ashdown in Hempstead, Howard, Little River, and Sevier counties. It was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed Millwood Dam in 1966 as a key unit in the Red River flood-reduction system below Lake Texoma. The project also supports water supply, recreation, and fish and wildlife habitat.

At conservation pool Millwood is a wide, shallow lowland lake with about 136 miles of mostly flat, marshy shoreline, averaging only about 7 feet deep and reaching near 36 feet in deeper holes. Flooded timber, cypress, and swampy flats create outstanding waterfowl and fish habitat but demand careful navigation, especially when the pool rises into flood storage.

The lake is renowned for crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, and waterfowl hunting, with fisheries managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Corps parks, boat ramps, and wildlife areas provide public access around the reservoir.

Water levels on Millwood Lake are managed by the Corps of Engineers around a conservation pool of 259.2 feet NGVD29, with a flood-control pool extending to 287 feet. Because the lake stores floodwater from a large Little River basin, elevations can rise substantially after heavy rain, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating safety and for fishing flooded timber.

Current Conditions

Millwood Lake is currently 0.62 feet above full pool and has risen slightly over the past week.
