Overview
Lake Greeson is a roughly 7,260-acre reservoir on the Little Missouri River in Pike County, Arkansas, about six miles north of Murfreesboro. It was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Vicksburg District) completed Narrows Dam in 1950. The project is operated for flood risk management, hydropower, recreation, water supply, and fish and wildlife management, and it is the district's only all-concrete dam.
At maximum power pool Greeson has about 134 miles of shoreline, averages near 40 feet deep, and reaches about 150 feet in deeper areas. Clear water, rocky ridges, and island-like points give the lake a scenic Ouachita Mountain character, while the conservation pool can be drawn down substantially for power and flood storage.
The lake is popular for camping, swimming, hiking, and fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish, and trout in the Little Missouri tailwater, with fisheries managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Numerous Corps parks, beaches, and boat ramps surround the reservoir.
Water levels on Lake Greeson are managed by the Corps of Engineers between a conservation pool near 504 feet and a maximum power pool of 548 feet NGVD29, with a flood-control pool extending to 563 feet. Elevations fluctuate with rainfall and hydropower generation, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, swimming, and shoreline access. Nearby DeGray Lake and Lake Ouachita complete the region's major Corps lakes.
