At-a-glance
Lay Lake is a reservoir on the Coosa River in central Alabama, formed by Lay Dam and operated by Alabama Power as part of the Coosa River chain. At full pool it covers roughly 12,000 acres between Logan Martin Lake upstream and Mitchell Lake downstream. Its long history on the Coosa system makes it both a regional power resource and a well-established recreational lake for the Birmingham and Montgomery areas.
The shoreline is winding and irregular, with creek arms, shallow flats, and defined river and creek channels running through rolling upland country. Submerged structure, points, and backwater coves create varied habitat across the basin. Seasonal water-level changes associated with hydropower operations expose additional shoreline and shift access to shallow cover throughout the reservoir.
Lay Lake supports strong populations of largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, catfish, and other sport species common to Alabama Coosa River reservoirs. The lake draws steady local fishing and boating use and sits within a connected chain of Coosa impoundments that together form one of the most active inland recreation corridors in the state.
