Recommendations for Lake Livingston

Overview

Lake Livingston is a roughly 77,700-acre reservoir on the Trinity River in Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, and Walker counties, about 70 miles north of Houston. Livingston Dam was completed in 1969 and is operated by the Trinity River Authority of Texas with the City of Houston as a major partner, primarily for water supply and recreation.

At conservation pool the lake has about 450 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 21 feet, and a maximum depth of about 77 feet. East Texas piney woods, long riverine arms, open-water basins, and residential shoreline create a large, relatively shallow water-supply lake with abundant cove and channel habitat.

Livingston is a major destination for boating, camping, and fishing for white bass, hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Public parks, marinas, and boat ramps around the lake draw heavy use from the Houston region.

Water levels are managed by the Trinity River Authority around a conservation pool of 131 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29). The project does not provide dedicated flood-control storage like many Corps lakes. Upstream Trinity basin reservoirs such as Lake Lewisville influence basin hydrology, so monitoring current Livingston levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.

Current Conditions

Lake Livingston is currently 0.94 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
