Recommendations for Lake Conroe

Overview

Lake Conroe is a roughly 19,900-acre reservoir on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River in Montgomery and Walker counties, north of Houston. The dam was completed in the early 1970s and is operated by the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA), with the City of Houston as co-owner, primarily for water supply and recreation.

At conservation pool the lake has about 150 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 20 feet, and a maximum depth of about 79 feet. Piney woods shoreline, residential development, creek arms, and open-water basins create a busy metro-adjacent reservoir with both developed and quieter coves.

Conroe is a major Houston-area destination for boating, water sports, and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and hybrid striped bass, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Public parks, marinas, and boat ramps around the lake support year-round recreation.

Water levels are managed by SJRA around a conservation pool of 201 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), with a flowage easement near 207 feet. Elevations respond to municipal demand, San Jacinto basin rainfall, and flood releases, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating safety, fishing, and dock access.

Current Conditions

Lake Conroe is currently 0.7 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
