Overview
Lake Jordan is a roughly 6,800-acre run-of-river reservoir on the Coosa River in Chilton, Coosa, and Elmore counties near Wetumpka, Alabama. Jordan Dam was completed in 1928 by Alabama Power at the historic Devil's Staircase rapids, and Walter Bouldin Dam was later added on a canal off the same pool. The project generates hydropower and supports recreation on the lower Coosa.
With about 118 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth near 110 feet at the dam, Jordan mixes main-river channel, rocky points, and developed coves. Normal full pool is held near 252 feet above mean sea level, and as a run-of-river lake its elevation stays relatively steady compared with upstream Coosa storage reservoirs.
The lake is popular for spotted and largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Public ramps, marinas, and shoreline communities around Wetumpka and the lower Coosa provide broad access for boating and fishing.
Water levels on Lake Jordan are managed by Alabama Power as a run-of-river project near 252 feet above mean sea level on the company's project gauge. Releases respond to inflows from Mitchell Lake and upstream Coosa storage lakes such as Logan Martin, so monitoring current lake levels and generation schedules is helpful for boating safety and fishing.
