Recommendations for Fort Gibson Lake

Overview

Fort Gibson Lake is a roughly 19,900-acre reservoir on the Grand (Neosho) River in Wagoner, Cherokee, and Mayes counties, about five miles northwest of historic Fort Gibson and northeast of Muskogee. It was created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a multipurpose project for flood control, hydropower, navigation support, and recreation on the Arkansas River system.

OWRB bathymetry shows about 211 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 15 feet, and a maximum depth of about 60 feet at normal pool. The lake stretches upstream toward Markham Ferry (Lake Hudson), with broad main-lake flats, timbered creek arms, and a strong riverine character on the upper end.

Fort Gibson is a major eastern Oklahoma fishing and boating destination for largemouth and spotted bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Corps parks, marinas, and public ramps provide extensive access between Muskogee and Wagoner.

Water levels are managed by the Corps around a conservation pool of 554 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), with flood-control storage to 582 feet. Upstream releases from Grand Lake o' the Cherokees and Lake Hudson strongly influence Fort Gibson elevations, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.

Current Conditions

Fort Gibson Lake is currently 1.52 feet above full pool and has been rising over the past week.
