Recommendations for Lake Eufaula

Overview

Lake Eufaula is a roughly 105,000-acre reservoir in eastern Oklahoma on the Canadian River, about 27 miles upstream from its confluence with the Arkansas River. Constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1964, it is the largest lake located entirely within Oklahoma. The project serves flood control, hydropower, navigation support, recreation, and water supply across a broad Canadian River tributary system.

The shoreline extends on the order of 800 miles through sandy flats, wooded coves, creek channels, and rocky bluffs. Large open-water basins transition into winding tributary arms fed by the Canadian, North Canadian, and Deep Fork rivers, creating a structurally diverse reservoir with significant seasonal water fluctuation. Broad mud flats, submerged timber, and sediment-rich creek mouths contribute to varied aquatic habitat across the rolling cross-timbers landscape of eastern Oklahoma.

Lake Eufaula is widely regarded as one of Oklahoma's premier multi-species fisheries, supporting largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass plus crappie, catfish, white bass, and striped bass below the dam. It is also a major destination for boating, camping, hunting, and tournament fishing, drawing millions of annual visitors to marinas, parks, and public recreation areas. Fisheries are managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation in coordination with Corps recreation management.

Water levels are managed by the Corps around a conservation pool of 585 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), with flood-control storage extending to 597 feet. Elevations respond to Canadian River basin runoff, power generation, and flood operations, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating safety, fishing, dock access, and navigating the lake's extensive shallow flats and creek arms.

Current Conditions

Lake Eufaula is currently 1.52 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
