Overview
Deer Creek Lake is a 1,277-acre reservoir on Deer Creek in Fayette and Pickaway counties in south-central Ohio. Completed in 1968, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District project serves flood risk management and recreation in the Scioto River basin. The reservoir and surrounding Deer Creek State Park create a substantial public outdoor destination between the agricultural plains of Fayette County and the Scioto valley landscape to the east.
The lake has about 18 miles of shoreline and reaches roughly 40 feet deep. Its compact basin includes the old creek channel, shallow coves, and wooded park shoreline that give anglers distinct channel and bank structure. Fields, woods, and creek arms around the state park frame a more intimate setting than the larger Columbus-area reservoirs farther north.
Deer Creek State Park supports boating, camping, golf, hiking, and fishing for common Ohio warmwater species such as bass, crappie, saugeye, and catfish. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources manages fishery programs and state-park facilities. Camping, ramps, and day-use areas make the lake a convenient outing for central and south-central Ohio travelers looking for a full-service park setting on a Corps reservoir.
Pool elevations use NGVD29: full pool is 810 feet and winter pool is 796 feet. The Corps retains seasonal storage for Deer Creek watershed inflows, and the sizeable seasonal range can shift shoreline cover and the usable depth at ramps. Monitoring current levels is especially important during drawdown periods and after heavy rain when the upper arms and shallow launches change quickly.
