Overview
Cobbosseecontee Lake (Cobbossee) is a 5,543-acre natural lake in Kennebec County southwest of Augusta, one of central Maine's largest and most popular waters. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife manages a noted bass and brown-trout fishery on the lake. The lake long fetch and irregular shoreline make it a central Maine destination within easy reach of Augusta. Public agencies publish current elevation and recreation notices that are worth checking before a long drive.
Maximum depth is about 100 feet, with roughly 62 miles of shoreline across irregular coves, islands, and developed shores in Manchester, Monmouth, Winthrop, and neighboring towns. Historic salmon and lake-trout management gave way to brown trout and bass as water quality changed. Local marinas and tackle shops often have the most current word on ramp conditions and fishing patterns.
Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing is regionally famous; brown trout, perch, and pickerel add diversity. Public launches at Manchester and Monmouth support heavy recreational use near the capital area. Town launches in Manchester and Monmouth are the primary public trailered-boat access points.
Levels are those of a natural lake with outlet control for downstream interests rather than a deep flood-storage rule curve. Seasonal vegetation and wind matter as much as elevation - monitor local conditions for boating and fishing. Maintaining stable spring levels is especially important for the lake renowned bass spawn.
