Overview
China Lake is a roughly 3,845-acre natural lake in the towns of China and Vassalboro, Kennebec County, Maine, about 15 miles northeast of Augusta. The west basin serves as a drinking-water supply for Waterville-area communities, while the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife manages the fishery. The west basin's water-supply role has limited shoreline development compared with the cottage-lined east basin. Seasonal weather and local access conditions reward a quick check of recent reports.
Two contrasting basins define the lake: a shallow, irregular, developed east basin and a deeper, more circular west basin reaching about 85 feet. Shoreline length is on the order of 22 miles. East-basin islands and coves create a different fishery than the deeper, rounder west basin.
Brown trout, bass, white perch, and pickerel are principal fisheries. Public launches at Vassalboro and China provide access; shoreline development is concentrated on the east basin. Brown trout stocking sustains a popular coldwater opportunity alongside bass and perch.
As a natural lake with a water-supply west basin, China does not follow a Corps-style flood pool. Levels move with precipitation and outlet management - check local conditions for boating and fishing.
