Overview
Lake Claiborne is a roughly 6,400-acre clear-water reservoir in Claiborne Parish near Homer in north Louisiana. The dam was completed in the mid-1960s by the Louisiana Department of Public Works / DOTD for recreation and water supply and is overseen locally by the Claiborne Parish Watershed District Commission. Lake Claiborne State Park on the southern shore is the primary public recreation hub.
At pool stage the lake stretches about 8.5 miles, with roughly 40 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 16 feet, and a maximum depth of about 35 feet. Clearer water than many north Louisiana reservoirs, mixed forest shoreline, and a relatively compact watershed give Claiborne a reputation for scenic boating and swimming as well as fishing.
Anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish, and stocked striped bass, with fisheries managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The state park offers a beach, boat launches, camping, cabins, and trails that draw visitors from across northern Louisiana.
Normal pool stage is 185 feet above mean sea level at the spillway crest; design-storm surcharge references extend toward about 198 feet. USGS stage is often discussed relative to a 9.0-foot gage reading at pool. Levels can rise quickly in major storms, and LDWF may schedule drawdowns for habitat work, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, docks, and park access. Nearby options include Bayou D'Arbonne Lake and Caney Lake.
