Overview

Sardis Lake is the largest of the four north Mississippi Yazoo Headwater flood-control lakes, impounding the Little Tallahatchie River northwest of Oxford. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, it provides flood risk management for the Mississippi Delta plus major recreation on a summer pool of roughly 32,000 acres. Sardis was the first of the four Yazoo Headwater lakes and remains the system's largest summer recreation pool.

The upper lake at summer pool is a broad, relatively shallow reservoir with timber, flats, and river channel; a smaller lower lake below the dam adds local recreation water. Seasonal drawdowns expose large areas of lake bed that later reflood as fish habitat. A smaller lower lake below the dam adds local skiing and day-use water separate from the big upper pool.

Sardis is a regional destination for crappie, bass, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Corps campgrounds, ramps, and day-use areas support heavy visitation. Annual Christmas-tree habitat drops and extensive undeveloped Corps shoreline support crappie and bass fishing.

Water levels follow a Corps seasonal rule curve between winter conservation pool and summer recreation pool, with flood storage above summer pool. Elevations can change quickly with basin rainfall, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and ramp access alongside Enid and Grenada. Summer recreation pool, winter conservation pool, and flood storage above summer pool define the operating year.
