Rough River Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Rough River in western Kentucky. Completed in 1959, the lake covers approximately 5,100 acres. It is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District for flood control, water supply, and recreation.
Rough River Lake features about 260 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth near 65 feet, producing an intricate network of wooded coves, creek arms, points, and winding channels relative to its surface area. Depth and bottom composition vary from shallow flats and cove heads to deeper water near the dam and main channel, offering diverse habitat for boaters and anglers. The high shoreline-to-acreage ratio is a defining physical trait of the basin.
The reservoir supports recreational boating, fishing, camping, and shoreline recreation through Corps and partner public access sites. Fisheries and boating regulations are guided by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Public ramps, parks, and recreation areas provide regional access for day-use and overnight visitors.
Louisville District manages Rough River on a seasonal guide curve expressed in NGVD29: winter pool near 470 feet, summer pool near 490 feet (a dam-safety operating target; the design summer pool was 495 feet), and flood pool to 524 feet. Rainfall, flood-storage needs, and seasonal recreation targets move elevations through that range. Monitoring lake levels matters for navigation in narrow arms, ramp usability, fishing patterns, and shoreline access as the pool shifts between winter, summer, and flood operations.
