Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in Florida and one of the most important water bodies in the southeastern United States. Located in south-central Florida, the lake covers approximately 451,000 acres and serves as the centerpiece of a vast watershed that includes the Kissimmee River basin. Lake Okeechobee is bordered by Okeechobee, Glades, Hendry, Martin, and Palm Beach counties and is managed through a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District. The lake plays a critical role in flood control, water supply, environmental restoration, navigation, and ecosystem management throughout South Florida.

The lake is broad and relatively shallow, with an average depth of approximately 9 feet across much of its basin. A large earthen flood-control structure known as the Herbert Hoover Dike surrounds much of the shoreline, protecting surrounding communities and agricultural areas from high-water events. The lake is connected to both coasts through the Okeechobee Waterway, which links the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico via a system of canals, rivers, and navigation locks. Extensive shallow flats, submerged vegetation, rim canals, open-water areas, and marsh habitats create a unique environment that supports diverse wildlife and recreational opportunities.

Lake Okeechobee is internationally recognized as one of North America's premier freshwater fisheries. Anglers travel from around the world to target largemouth bass, black crappie (speckled perch), bluegill, redear sunfish, and catfish. The lake's expansive grass beds, spawning habitat, and nutrient-rich waters support productive year-round fishing. Fishing regulations and fisheries management are overseen by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which works alongside state and federal agencies to protect aquatic resources and maintain recreational opportunities. In addition to fishing, the lake attracts boaters, birdwatchers, photographers, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts who utilize the numerous public boat ramps, marinas, parks, and recreational facilities located around the shoreline. Popular access areas include Clewiston, Okeechobee, Belle Glade, and several locations along the Rim Canal.

Water levels on Lake Okeechobee are closely monitored and actively managed because they influence flood protection, navigation, water supply, ecosystem health, and recreational access across South Florida. Rainfall throughout the Kissimmee River watershed, tropical weather systems, drought conditions, and operational releases to the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries can all affect lake elevations throughout the year. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages water levels under the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM), balancing flood-control requirements with environmental and water-supply needs. Monitoring current lake levels is important for boaters, anglers, waterfront property owners, and anyone planning activities on Florida's largest freshwater lake.
