Overview
Normandy Lake is a roughly 3,200-acre reservoir on the Duck River in Bedford and Coffee counties in south-central Tennessee, near the communities of Normandy and Manchester. It was completed in 1976 by the Tennessee Valley Authority as a non-power dam for flood damage reduction, water supply, and recreation — the largest of TVA's nonpower tributary dams. The project protects downstream communities on the Duck River while creating a quiet highland recreation lake.
About 17 miles long with roughly 72 miles of shoreline, Normandy typically varies about 11 feet from summer to winter for seasonal flood storage. Rolling farmland and wooded ridges frame creek arms, points, and a defined river channel, and the Duck River watershed is one of the most biologically diverse river systems in the nation. A fish hatchery immediately downstream of the dam relies on cool, regulated releases from the reservoir.
The lake is popular for bass and walleye fishing, camping, and boating, especially around Barton Springs Recreation Area and other TVA access sites. Fisheries are managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and public ramps and campgrounds draw visitors from Tullahoma, Shelbyville, and the broader Middle Tennessee region. The relatively undeveloped shoreline gives Normandy a quieter feel than the large mainstem lakes.
Water levels on Normandy Lake are managed by TVA around a summer full pool of 875 feet above mean sea level, with a winter pool near 864 feet. Elevations shift seasonally and with rainfall as the dam stores and releases floodwater on the Duck River. Monitoring current lake levels is helpful for boating, fishing, dock access, and shoreline camping throughout the year.
