Recommendations for Nantachie Lake

Overview

Nantachie Lake is a roughly 1,580-acre reservoir on Nantachie Creek in Grant Parish in central Louisiana. The earthen dam was completed in 1964 by the Louisiana Department of Public Works for recreation and local water storage. Fisheries and periodic lake-management drawdowns are led by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The lake has about 22 miles of mostly privately developed shoreline, with a maximum depth near 17 feet and a mix of creek channel, flats, and timbered edges typical of mid-size Louisiana parish reservoirs. Public land along the shore is limited, so boat ramps are the main way most visitors reach the water.

Anglers fish Nantachie for largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish, and the surrounding wetlands also support seasonal waterfowl hunting and birding. Several free public boat ramps provide access for local and regional fishermen.

Water levels are referenced to a normal pool near 95 feet above mean sea level. LDWF occasionally schedules drawdowns of several feet to manage aquatic vegetation and improve habitat, which can expose stumps and change ramp usability—so monitoring current lake levels is important before launching. Larger nearby options include Toledo Bend and Grand Bayou Reservoir.
