Overview
Lake Nacimiento is a Monterey County Water Resources Agency reservoir on the Nacimiento River in California’s central Coast Ranges. Completed in 1957, the lake covers approximately 5,727 acres. It is managed by the Monterey County Water Resources Agency for water supply, flood management, and recreation.
With about 165 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth near 175 feet, Nacimiento presents a highly indented basin of long arms, coves, points, and deep main-lake water. Depth and bottom composition change sharply between shallow cove heads and deep canyon-style pool areas, creating varied habitat for boaters and anglers. The high shoreline mileage relative to surface acres is a defining physical trait of the reservoir.
Lake Nacimiento supports recreational boating, fishing, and shoreline recreation through public and commercial access facilities around the pool. Fisheries and boating regulations are supported by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Ramps, marinas, and recreation sites provide regional access for visitors to the central Coast Ranges.
MCWRA manages Nacimiento with published references that include full pool near 800 feet, a conservation/spillway elevation near 787.75 feet, flood storage near 801 feet, and dead pool near 670 feet. Seasonal runoff, water-supply operations, and flood-space management move elevations through that band. Monitoring lake levels matters for navigation in narrow arms, ramp usability, fishing patterns, and shoreline access as the pool rises and falls.
