Overview
Mullett Lake is a roughly 16,630-acre inland lake in Cheboygan County and one of Michigan's largest inland lakes. It is a key link in the Inland Waterway between Burt Lake (via the Indian River) and Lake Huron (via the Cheboygan River). Levels are regulated at the Cheboygan Dam; the Michigan Department of Natural Resources provides waterway guidance for boaters traveling the chain between inland lakes and the Great Lakes.
With about 28 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 35 feet, and a maximum depth of about 147 feet, Mullett has a deep central basin and shallower northern flats with sunken islands. The Pigeon River and other streams add to the Indian River inflow from Burt, creating a mix of open water, weed edges, and channel habitat popular with both cruisers and anglers exploring the northern Lower Peninsula.
The lake supports boating along the Inland Waterway and fishing for walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish under Michigan DNR regulations. Public ramps and a largely residential shoreline serve year-round and seasonal use, and the navigable connection through the waterway makes Mullett a hub for northern Michigan boat traffic between inland lakes and Lake Huron without requiring a trailer move.
Cheboygan Dam operations target roughly 593 feet in summer and about 592 feet in winter (NAVD88). Unlike Great Lakes waters reported in IGLD85, Mullett's regulated inland pool is managed for navigation and seasonal conditions on the waterway, so monitoring current pool elevation is helpful for boating, fishing, dock access, and shoreline use throughout the year.
