The basin is characterized by about 75,450 acres of surface area, a maximum depth near 246 feet. Shoreline and bottom character vary from protected coves and flats to deeper water, supporting a mix of open-water and nearshore habitats.
Moosehead Lake supports recreational boating and fishing. Public access is through area ramps, parks, and shoreline facilities where provided by the operator. Fishing and boating regulations are set by the relevant state wildlife agency.
Moosehead Lake is not operated to a classic reservoir full-pool curve. Where a gauge exists, water-surface elevation is the reference. Conditions still matter for boating, fishing access, and shoreline use.
