Overview
Lake of the Woods is a natural lake in MN. Primary inflow is Rainy River. It is managed by Minnesota DNR / Lake of the Woods Control Board.
The basin is characterized by about 950,000 acres of surface area, a maximum depth near 210 feet. Shoreline and bottom character vary from protected coves and flats to deeper water, supporting a mix of open-water and nearshore habitats.
Lake of the Woods supports recreational boating and fishing. Public access is through area ramps, parks, and shoreline facilities where provided by the operator. Fishing and boating regulations are set by the relevant state wildlife agency.
Lake of the Woods is not operated to a classic reservoir full-pool curve. Where a gauge exists, water-surface elevation is the reference. Conditions still matter for boating, fishing access, and shoreline use.
