Recommendations for La Cygne Lake

Overview

La Cygne Lake (La Cygne Reservoir) is an approximately 2,600-acre power-plant cooling reservoir in Linn County, Kansas, owned by Evergy and opened to public fishing as a Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks fishing location. It is operated primarily for once-through cooling rather than as a Corps flood-control lake. Warm cooling-water discharge can keep parts of the lake ice-free and fishable earlier than nearby natural waters.

Maximum depth is about 40 feet. Warm discharge water, points, and limited public shoreline create a distinctive power-plant lake fishery in the Marais des Cygnes basin. Public use is limited to designated wildlife-area zones; shoreline is not a typical residential lake community.

The lake is known for bass and other warmwater species under KDWP regulations. Public access is focused on designated wildlife-area ramps and shore fishing zones - not private lakeside development. KDWP manages the public fishery separately from Evergy's plant operations and security needs.

Pool elevation is held near a normal operating level around 841 feet above mean sea level for plant operations. Levels are steadier than flood-control reservoirs but can still move with plant needs and weather; check access notices and current conditions before launching. Anglers should confirm access hours and any plant-related closures before launching. Visitors who track the official gage before launching avoid the most common access surprises.
