Overview
Lake James is a 6,812-acre reservoir in the mountains of western North Carolina, straddling the Burke-McDowell county line near Marion and Morganton. It is the uppermost lake on the Catawba River, created by Duke Energy (then Duke Power) between 1916 and 1923 behind a series of earthen dams, and named for tobacco magnate and Duke University benefactor James B. Duke. The lake still generates hydroelectric power at the Bridgewater plant.
Fed by the Catawba, North Fork Catawba, and Linville rivers, Lake James has about 150 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 46 feet, and a maximum depth of roughly 118 feet. Because it sits at the head of the Catawba chain in a lightly developed mountain watershed, it is prized as one of the clearest and most scenic reservoirs in the Southeast, with a dramatic backdrop of the Blue Ridge and Linville Gorge.
The lake is popular for boating, paddling, and fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, muskie, and crappie, with fisheries managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Lake James State Park, with its beach, campgrounds, and trails, along with Duke Energy access areas and marinas, provides extensive public access.
Water levels on Lake James are managed by Duke Energy as part of the Catawba-Wateree system. Duke reports the lake against a relative gauge where 100.0 feet represents full pond (an actual elevation of about 1,200 feet above mean sea level). As the headwater storage reservoir, its level responds to rainfall, drought, and releases down the chain toward Lake Rhodhiss and beyond, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.
