Recommendations for Indian Lake

Overview

Indian Lake is a 5,104-acre lake in Logan County at the headwaters of the Great Miami River, managed through Indian Lake State Park by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It collects the North and South Forks of the Upper Great Miami River and local creeks before discharge through its spillway. A long history of water control has evolved into one of Ohio's best-known state-park lake destinations, with communities and public access ringing much of the shore.

The lake has about 68 miles of shoreline, an average depth of only about 4.5 feet, and a maximum depth near 16 feet. Islands, shallow flats, channels, and wind-exposed open water dominate the basin and give Indian Lake a character unlike deep valley reservoirs elsewhere in the state. That shallow, island-studded form rewards careful navigation and creates extensive warmwater habitat across broad flats and protected pockets.

Boating, sailing, fishing, camping, and island exploration are signature activities. The shallow habitat supports bass, crappie, catfish, and other warmwater fish and requires attention to marked channels, especially in wind. Visitors should use Ohio Department of Natural Resources park and fishing guidance for access, regulations, and seasonal conditions around Indian Lake State Park's ramps, campgrounds, and day-use areas.

The listed full pool is 999 feet above mean sea level. No geodetic vertical datum, winter-pool target, or flood-pool value is assigned in the catalog; local spillway operations, headwater inflows, and wind can all affect usable water conditions. Checking current levels and weather remains important for boating safety, shallow-water navigation, and shoreline access on this broad, wind-sensitive lake.

Current Conditions

Indian Lake is currently 2.85 feet below full pool and has risen slightly over the past week.
