Overview
Hyco Lake is a roughly 3,750-acre reservoir in north-central North Carolina near the Virginia border, primarily in Person County. It was created in the 1960s as a cooling reservoir for electric power generation and is associated with Duke Energy operations on the Hyco Creek watershed. Its compact size, warm-water character, and proximity to the Triangle and Southside Virginia make it a notable recreational and fisheries resource.
The shoreline runs about 35 miles through wooded coves, residential stretches, gently sloping banks, and numerous creek inlets. The reservoir mixes open-water basins with defined channel areas, points, and submerged structure, creating a diverse underwater landscape. Historically elevated temperatures from power-plant cooling have shaped seasonal fishing patterns and aquatic conditions across the lake.
Hyco is recognized for a productive warm-water fishery of largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish, with fisheries managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Public and private launches, waterfront communities, and day-use access support fishing, boating, and lakeside recreation while the reservoir remains closely tied to regional energy infrastructure.
Water levels on Hyco Lake are managed in connection with power-plant and reservoir operations around a normal full-pond elevation near 410 feet. Because the lake functions as a cooling and water-management pool rather than a large Corps flood-control project, elevations still respond to plant demand, rainfall, and releases, so monitoring current lake levels is helpful for boating, fishing, and shoreline access throughout the year.
