Overview
Great Falls Reservoir is a Catawba River impoundment near the town of Great Falls in Chester County, South Carolina. Part of the historic Great Falls-Dearborn hydroelectric development first built in 1907, it is owned and operated by Duke Energy as part of the Catawba-Wateree hydroelectric system, generating power through diversion dams and powerhouses along a dramatic reach of the river.
The reservoir occupies a rocky, historically industrial stretch of the Catawba where the river drops steeply, giving it a compact, river-oriented character of channels, bypassed reaches, and wooded banks rather than broad open water. Recent Duke Energy projects have restored managed flows to previously dewatered river channels, creating new whitewater runs and reconnecting the river corridor around the town of Great Falls.
The lake and its tailwaters support largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, and the area has become a growing destination for paddling and river recreation as new access areas, portages, and the planned Dearborn Island State Park come online. Fisheries are managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).
Water levels on Great Falls Reservoir are managed by Duke Energy as part of the Catawba-Wateree chain and are reported against a relative full-pond gauge. Pneumatically controlled gates provide aquatic flows, recreation-flow releases, and flood management along the bypassed reaches. Because the reservoir sits within a coordinated chain from Lake Wylie to Lake Wateree, levels and flows shift with rainfall and generation, so checking current conditions is important before boating or paddling.
