Overview
Cedar Creek Reservoir is a small Catawba River impoundment near Great Falls in Chester and Fairfield counties, South Carolina. It is one of the reservoirs in the Great Falls area of Duke Energy's Catawba-Wateree hydroelectric system, working together with the adjacent Great Falls development to generate hydroelectric power along this reach of the river.
Covering roughly 1,300 acres, Cedar Creek is a compact, river-influenced reservoir of wooded shoreline, coves, and a defined river channel. Like the other Great Falls-area impoundments, it has a run-of-the-river character with limited storage, so its shape and depth are strongly shaped by the flow of the Catawba River.
The reservoir supports a warmwater fishery for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream typical of the lower Catawba lakes, and Duke Energy has been adding recreation access in the Great Falls area, including a canoe and kayak launch on Cedar Creek. Fisheries are managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).
Water levels on Cedar Creek Reservoir are managed by Duke Energy as part of the Catawba-Wateree chain and are reported against a relative full-pond gauge. As a small run-of-river lake, its level responds quickly to rainfall, upstream releases, and generation across the chain from Lake Wylie to Lake Wateree, so monitoring current conditions is important before boating, paddling, or fishing.
