Overview
Fall River Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Fall River in Greenwood County, southeast Kansas. The Kansas City District operates the project for flood risk management, water quality, fish and wildlife, and recreation on a multipurpose pool of roughly 2,400-2,500 acres. Fall River Lake is one of several southeastern Kansas Corps lakes built for Verdigris/Fall River flood control.
The lake is relatively shallow (maximum depth near 25 feet) with about 50 miles of wooded shoreline, creek arms, and timber typical of eastern Kansas Corps lakes. Timbered coves and a relatively small open-water footprint favor local fishing over big-water sailing.
Fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish is managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Corps parks, campgrounds, and ramps provide public access. Corps campgrounds and KDWP fishing access keep the lake popular with regional anglers.
Water levels follow a Corps guide curve around a multipurpose pool near 948 feet NGVD29, with flood storage above. Seasonal and storm-driven changes affect cover and ramps, so monitoring current lake levels is useful for fishing and boating. Flood pool expansions after heavy rains can temporarily open timber that is dry at multipurpose pool. Visitors who track the official gage before launching avoid the most common access surprises.
