Recommendations for Lake Eufaula

Overview

Lake Eufaula, officially Walter F. George Lake, is a roughly 45,200-acre reservoir along the Alabama–Georgia border on the Chattahoochee River in the lower Apalachicola–Chattahoochee–Flint system. Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and completed in the early 1960s, the lake extends nearly 85 miles upstream from Walter F. George Dam. It is an important regional resource for flood control, hydropower, navigation support, recreation, and water management.

With about 640 miles of shoreline, the reservoir features expansive flats, winding creek arms, submerged timber, shallow backwaters, and long stretches of open river-lake habitat. Much of the setting reflects the rolling terrain and forested lowlands of southwest Georgia and southeast Alabama, with extensive wetlands, wildlife habitat, and protected shoreline areas. Defined river and creek channels, flooded brush, and shallow spawning areas create a structurally diverse fishery environment.

Lake Eufaula is widely recognized as one of the premier bass fisheries in the southeastern United States, supporting strong populations of largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, striped bass, and bream. The reservoir has hosted numerous major fishing tournaments and remains closely associated with competitive bass fishing culture. Fisheries are managed cooperatively by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Alabama's conservation agency, while Corps parks, campgrounds, and ramps support extensive boating and outdoor recreation.

Water levels on Walter F. George Lake are managed by the Corps as part of the ACF system, with a normal full-pool elevation near 188 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29). Because the lake sits downstream of West Point Lake and Lake Lanier in the Chattahoochee chain, elevations respond to basin-wide operations, rainfall, and drought, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and shoreline access.
