Recommendations for Westpoint Lake

Overview

West Point Lake is a roughly 25,900-acre reservoir on the Chattahoochee River along the Georgia-Alabama line, spanning Troup and Heard counties in Georgia and Chambers and Randolph counties in Alabama. It was created in 1975 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed West Point Dam, one of five federal dams on the Chattahoochee. The project provides flood risk management, hydroelectric power, water supply, water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation.

Stretching about 34 miles up the Chattahoochee just north of West Point, Georgia, the lake averages near 23 feet deep and reaches about 85 feet close to the dam, with roughly 525 miles of shoreline. Broad open-water flats, timbered creek arms, and a designated wildlife management emphasis on the upper end give West Point a mix of habitat, and large blocks of Corps land keep much of the shoreline in a natural state.

West Point is a well-known fishing lake, especially for largemouth bass, hybrid and striped bass, crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed cooperatively by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Alabama's conservation agency. Corps parks, campgrounds, boat ramps, and wildlife areas provide extensive public access on both the Georgia and Alabama shores.

Water levels on West Point Lake are managed by the Corps of Engineers under a seasonal rule curve, with a summer conservation pool of 635 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), a winter pool near 628 feet, and a flood-control pool extending to about 641 feet. Because the lake sits between Lake Lanier upstream and Lake Eufaula downstream in the Chattahoochee system, elevations respond to basin-wide operations, rainfall, and drought, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and dock access.

Current Conditions

Westpoint Lake is currently 1.89 feet below full pool and has been falling over the past week.
