Recommendations for Bois d'Arc Lake

Overview

Bois d'Arc Lake is a roughly 16,640-acre water-supply reservoir on Bois d'Arc Creek in Fannin County, northeast Texas, near Bonham. The newest major reservoir in the state, it was filled in the early 2020s and is owned and operated by the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) to supply growing communities in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, with recreation developed alongside water storage.

At conservation pool the lake covers about 16,641 acres with roughly 172 miles of shoreline, an average depth near 22 feet, and a maximum depth of about 70 feet. New timber, creek channels, points, and developing shoreline habitat give the basin a young-reservoir character that is still settling into its long-term fishery and recreation pattern.

Bois d'Arc is emerging as a North Texas destination for boating and fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish, with fisheries managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Public parks, boat ramps, and NTMWD recreation facilities provide access as shoreline amenities continue to expand.

Water levels are managed by NTMWD around a conservation pool of 534 feet (NAVD88 / MSL contours used in shoreline management), with a fee-boundary / 100-year flood elevation near 541 feet. Elevations respond to municipal demand and rainfall in the Red River basin headwaters, so monitoring current lake levels is helpful for boating, fishing, and shoreline access.
