Recommendations for Blue Cypress Lake

Overview

Blue Cypress Lake is a roughly 6,555-acre natural lake in Indian River County near Fellsmere, and it is the headwaters lake of the St. Johns River. Water levels and surrounding conservation lands are managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District as part of the Upper St. Johns River Basin project, which stores and treats water while reducing harmful discharges to the Indian River Lagoon.

The lake averages about 8 feet deep and has roughly 21 miles of shoreline framed by cypress swamp, spatterdock, and marsh. Inflows arrive from Blue Cypress Creek and other marsh canals; outflow moves northwest into the St. Johns River system through managed canals and structures. The setting is remote and scenic compared with more developed Central Florida lakes.

Blue Cypress is known for largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, black crappie, and catfish, with fisheries managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Access is limited but includes Blue Cypress Lakeside Cabins and public launches serving the conservation area, and the lake is a draw for anglers seeking a quieter Upper St. Johns experience.

SJRWMD operates Blue Cypress under a published regulation schedule reported in NAVD88, with stages commonly managed near the mid-20s feet above mean sea level. Levels move with rainfall, marsh storage, and structure releases that also affect nearby restoration features such as Headwaters Lake, so checking current elevations is important for navigation through shallow, vegetated water.

Current Conditions

Blue Cypress Lake is currently 3.35 feet below full pool and has fallen slightly over the past week.
