Overview
Blewett Falls Lake is a roughly 2,550-acre reservoir on the Pee Dee River in south-central North Carolina, primarily in Richmond and Anson counties near Rockingham. It was created when Blewett Falls Dam was completed in the early 1900s and is operated today by Duke Energy as part of the Yadkin-Pee Dee hydroelectric system. The lake's riverine setting and long history of power generation make it an important water and recreation resource for the Pee Dee basin.
The shoreline stretches about 34 miles through wooded banks, narrow creek embayments, and more open river-lake reaches. Defined river channels, submerged timber, points, drop-offs, and transitional habitat zones give the basin a structurally diverse, somewhat river-oriented character that differs from broader Piedmont storage lakes upstream on the Yadkin chain.
Blewett Falls supports a productive fishery of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish, with regulations and management guidance from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Public and private access points serve anglers and boaters, and the lake remains a valued destination for fishing and outdoor recreation between the Sandhills and the South Carolina line.
Water levels on Blewett Falls Lake are managed by Duke Energy for hydroelectric generation and river operations on the Pee Dee, with a normal full-pond elevation near 178 feet. Releases and inflows from the Yadkin-Pee Dee system—including upstream projects such as Lake Tillery—can move the pool with generation schedules and rainfall, so monitoring current lake levels is important for boating, fishing, and shoreline access.
