Lake Apopka is Florida's fourth-largest lake, covering roughly 30,800 acres in Orange and Lake counties about 15 miles northwest of Orlando. It is the headwater of the Harris Chain of Lakes and the Ocklawaha River, and water levels and restoration are led by the St. Johns River Water Management District. Once a nationally famous bass fishery, the lake was heavily degraded by nutrient loading from north-shore muck farms; decades of land acquisition, wetland restoration, and phosphorus controls are rebuilding water quality and habitat.

At a reference stage of about 66.5 feet NGVD29 the lake averages only about 5.4 feet deep and reaches near 16 feet in deeper pockets. Broad open water, recovering submerged vegetation along much of the shoreline, and the Apopka-Beauclair Canal outlet define a shallow Central Florida basin. The restored North Shore wetlands and Marsh Flow-Way now treat water that once carried heavy phosphorus loads into the lake.

Apopka draws anglers and paddlers as clarity and native plants return, with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and crappie the primary targets. Fisheries are managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Public ramps, the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive and Loop Trail, and nearby parks provide access around the lake and its restored marshes.

Water levels are regulated by SJRWMD at the Apopka-Beauclair Lock and Dam under a seasonal schedule centered near 66.5 feet above mean sea level (NGVD29), typically held lower in the wet season for flood storage. Outflows feed Lake Harris and the rest of the Harris Chain toward Lake Griffin and the Ocklawaha, so monitoring current lake levels matters for boating, fishing, and shoreline access.
