Overview
Angostura Reservoir is on the Cheyenne River in Fall River County, South Dakota, about 10 miles southeast of Hot Springs. Angostura Dam, completed in 1949, is the storage works of the Angostura Unit of the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program. The name is Spanish for narrows. A 2004 Reclamation survey measured 4,612 acres and 123,048 acre-feet at the top of the conservation pool, elevation 3,187.2 feet. Active conservation storage is 80,843 acre-feet. The dam is owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and was built for irrigation, with flood control, fish and wildlife, recreation, and sediment storage among the authorized purposes.
